Little Lobbyists Condemn President Trump’s Budget Proposal

During his presidential campaign in 2016, then Candidate Trump repeatedly promised he would not cut Medicaid, Medicare, or Social Security. This morning, the president released his new budget proposal and once again, broke his promise to the American people. A budget is a statement of values, and President Trump’s is no exception.  In his budget, he values private corporations and profits over feeding America’s children; tax cuts for the wealthy over health care; large defense expenditures over caring for our elderly; and he prizes a border wall over the lives of our children.

This budget proposes dramatic and sweeping cuts totalling $1 trillion to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, nutrition assistance, and other social safety net programs all while spending $1.4 trillion extending the 2017 tax cuts for wealthy Americans. These programs help millions of Americans— including more than 35 million children.  A large part of the plan to pay for the president’s priorities relies on the complete overturn, without replacement, of the Affordable Care Act, a law that has literally saved the lives of so many of our children. 

This budget is a direct attack on our children and our families.   We are disappointed, though sadly not surprised, that the president has once again broken his campaign promises.  We absolutely reject this vision for our country and we call upon our legislators to reject this budget and the dangerous values it espouses.  Our children’s lives depend on it.
