Little Lobbyists Oppose the Nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court

Little Lobbyists is a family-led organization advocating for children with complex medical needs and disabilities, and we strongly oppose the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments in the Trump Administration backed lawsuit to repeal the Affordable Care Act on November 10th, just one week after the election. Republicans are rushing to put a justice on the Supreme Court who will back their lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act, ripping health care away from millions of Americans and raising their costs in the middle of the pandemic. 

Judge Barrett has repeatedly voiced her opposition to the Affordable Care Act and has said she would support lawsuits to overturn the ACA, criticizing Chief Justice Roberts for his opinion in NFIB v. Sebelius, which upheld the ACA against a constitutional challenge, saying he “pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute.”  Additionally, in a 2015 NPR interview, Barrett expressed disagreement with the Supreme Court’s majority opinion in King v. Burwell, the second case in which the Court upheld the ACA, saying the dissent had “the better of the legal argument.”

Tragically, the stakes for the health and well-being of millions of Americans are all too real. The ACA has saved and improved the lives of our children with complex medical needs and disabilities with its ban on annual/lifetime limits, protections for those with pre-existing conditions, and coverage for essential health benefits, amongst other provisions. As countless medical and advocacy groups have made clear, the ACA yields improved health outcomes, especially in states that have accepted Medicaid expansion, and repealing the ACA would have harmful and potentially fatal consequences on patients and a devastating impact on the American health care system as a whole. If Amy Barrett s confirmed, she could spend her lifetime tenure attacking access to affordable health care in this country.

As a lifetime appointment, Judge Barrett’s confirmation would mean decades of rulings undermining the rights of those most in need of protection, in favor of the wealthy and powerful. Millions of Americans, including our children, cannot afford that.

Little Lobbyists urge all senators to oppose Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the United States Supreme Court. Our childrens’ lives depend on it.
